Campingpark Freibad Echternacherbruck, Germany.

Very good site 15 miles north of Tier on the German / Luxembourg border. Cross the bridge you are into Luxembourg. This area is called the “Little Switzerland of Luxembourg” with plenty of good walking & cycling trails. We were lucky and had a riverside pitch saved for us, (by a German couple!) however in peak times they do charge extra. The town of Echternach is very nice with plenty of cafe’s in the market place. There is a very nice park on the edge of the town with old Roman ruins, which is very interesting. A good cycle ride is to follow the cycle path on the Luxembourg side and follow the river all the way until it joins the Mosel river, a round trip of 30 miles and also a couple of nice bars.

In this area there are lots of memorials to the allied forces, who were fighting their way to the River Rhine from the Normandy landings.

This memorial is to the American Rangers, who were crossing the river Sauer in February 1945, while it was in flood and under fire from the German army. Further north is the ‘Battle of the Bulge’ area.

Clausthal-Zellerfield (Harz Mountains), Germany.

Another very good site, Camping Prahljust located in Clausthal-Zellerfield in the Harz Mountains, Germany. The site is next to a lake surrounded by a forest, with lots of tracks and paths, just the thing if you like walking and /or cycling or in winter cross country skiing. Explore the stunning natural environment. The site is also near the Brocken steam railway within the Harz national park, and the famous Brocken ‘witches’. Clausthal-Zellerfield is a nice town and also Goslar. A little further away is Wulfenbuttel, which used to be the base of the British Rhine Army in cold war years and also the production of this very nice drink!

It is a very good site, however you are only allowed 3kw of electric per day with Camping Cheques, camp staff connect /disconnect and take a meter reading, it does cost if you go over the limit, I just used more gas.

Nice views from the awning, and better still after a 30 mile cycle ride through the forest and country roads.

The site has a nice little bar and restaurant, serving good traditional meals and local beer. Good toilet /shower /dish washing facilities and warm, it is also a winter site. If needed, there is the use of electric hot plates in the dishwashing area, good for a big pan of stew, in winter time or even summer.

And the lake also offers good safe swimming.. yes seen after my 20min. swim!!!!

Time to go home, Sue knows all about caravan weights and loading! It was very clear “You can only have 6 bottles, not 6 crates, remember the 2 cases of wine bought in that Luxembourg supermarket” !!!!!!!
